S.CU dc100: The new transport refrigeration unit for lower fuel consumption and high cooling capacity

With the new S.CU dc100, Schmitz Cargobull is introducing VarioFlow technology to transport refrigeration units for the first time. The VarioFlow system, used in transport refrigeration technology, regulates refrigeration output and heat/cold transfer independently of one another. This reduces fuel consumption, ensures stable temperature control and high operational reliability.

“The S.CU dc100 always delivers exactly the performance required for the transport situation at hand. This saves fuel, reduces operating costs and increases reliability in day-to-day transport operations,” explains Jonathan Steckel, Head of Product Management at Cargobull Cool GmbH & Co. KG. The measurable effect: compared with its predecessor, the S.CU dc90, the S.CU dc100 consumes up to eight per cent less fuel whilst delivering up to 11 per cent more cooling capacity.

At the heart of the system is a two-stage compressor, which is directly connected to the diesel generator set via an electric drive, as well as new VarioFlow fans for the evaporator, condenser and engine room. In conventional transport refrigeration units, refrigeration generation and heat exchange are coupled. In contrast, the S.CU dc100, featuring VarioFlow technology, individually adjusts the speeds of the compressor, evaporator, condenser and engine room fans to the respective requirements, ensuring that each component operates at its optimum operating point at all times. “This ensures that exactly the cooling capacity required for the specific transport and environmental conditions is provided, whilst guaranteeing precise temperature control in the trailer with minimal energy consumption,” adds Steckel. Furthermore, even if one fan fails, cooling operation is maintained as the other two fans take over its function. This enhances reliability in day-to-day transport operations.

Faster pulldown times and intuitive operation

With the new S.CU dc100, the cooling time from +30°C to –20°C is reduced by around 15 per cent. This means that the required transport temperature can be reached more quickly, whilst at the same time reducing energy consumption during the cooling phase.

At high outside temperatures, reliability is enhanced by the deliberate increase in the speed of the VarioFlow fans on the hot side (condenser and engine compartment). Furthermore, the optimised operating mode reduces the strain on the components and helps to extend their service life. Service-friendly 48-volt VarioFlow fans and a modular design with a high proportion of common parts within the S.CU modular system also ensure hassle-free maintenance and high vehicle availability.

“The operation also remains just as intuitive,” emphasises Steckel. “As usual, the user enters the desired machine settings, and the compressor and VarioFlow fans are controlled automatically.” For added convenience, the control panel on the S.CU is now slightly angled, making the information on the display even easier to read.

Last but not least, the S.CU dc100 also does justice to the environment. Schmitz Cargobull had already introduced the R454A refrigerant in Europe with its predecessor models, the S.CU dc90 and the S.CU d80. The new S.CU dc100 meets the stricter requirements of the EU F-Gas Regulation, has a significantly lower direct GWP (Global Warming Potential) and reduces CO₂ equivalents by 89 per cent compared with the previous refrigerant, R452A.
